Block 5 - Empire Star

We are in Week 5 of The Spicerack Sampler! And this week our block is the Empire Star!

I came across this block in Maggie Malone's 5500 Quilt Block Designs.

I highly recommend this book! Maggie Malone collected 5500 different quilt blocks to include in this encyclopedia volume.  There are no instructions or measurements, just designs.  But perusing through these designs really gets the creative juices flowing!
The Empire Star block first appeared in Hearth and Home Magazine, which circulated from 1885 to the 1930s. I don't feel like I've seen this design anywhere in modern quilting, so I had to include it in my sampler.

I have TWO different ways you can put this block together.  Click the image below to see me assemble it one of those ways on YouTube.

And here are some mock-ups I made in EQ8 to show you what you can do with this block.

For the first one, I just repeated the same block throughout.  I colored the design in green and left the background cream. I like the secondary patterns that emerge here.

Then I decided to use two blocks, one like above and the other colored in reverse: the design in cream and the background in green. I placed those blocks in a checkerboard design. A little more interest here.

And finally, I used the two blocks like above, but instead of the checkerboard pattern, I placed them in columns.  I think I like this one the best!

What do you think? Which one do you like best? Let me know in the comments below!

As I've mentioned throughout this series, I whipped up these mock-ups in EQ8.  I am not sponsored by them, but if you click on the Amazon link below, I may get a small commission if you buy something.  You can see my disclosure at the bottom of the blog.  And I just wanted to tell you all how much I'm loving this program! Best purchase I've made in a long time!

And of course, there's so much you can do with this block in regards to color, too!  That could really set off some secondary patterns.

But since I'm making a sampler, I'm just making one of the Empire Star blocks.  That puts me up to five blocks total. And seven more to go.

If you're just now joining me in this series, here is a picture of the complete set.  These 12 blocks I'm calling The Spicerack Sampler! They're all classic quilt blocks, but I'm attempting to put a modern spin on each one.  I hope you join me in making these! They range from easy to more challenging, but they're meant to be a skill builder.  I'll walk you through each step and help you add a number of skills to your repertoire!  And these are all traditionally pieced.  No Y-seams, paper templates or foundation paper piecing.
